A well-known face in the international media and in the diplomatic arena, IDF Major General Yoav Mordechai is a luminary. Across the board, this Israeli officer is respected for his skill, his bravado and his unmistakable regard for humanity. The career officer’s most recent prestigious appointments include being named IDF Spokesman and later promoted to his present post as Coordinator of Israeli Government Activities in the Territories.

And it all started at his high school alma mater, Boys Town Jerusalem.

“I began my journey here,” he told students and faculty on a visit to the BTJ campus.“This is where I learned the discipline, the tools for analyzing problems, and the devotion to study that I’ve taken with me throughout my more than three decades in the military.”

Mordechai, a 1982 graduate of Boys Town Jerusalem, has extensive experience as a field commander. He is fluent in Arabic and known as a top expert in Arab affairs.

During his visit to the Boys Town campus, Major Gen. Mordechai was reunited with many of his former instructors, including his much-loved teacher, Rabbi Moshe Sharabani.  “I’ve never forgotten the many times I was a guest at the rabbi’s home when I lived in the dormitory,” the general said. “His personal example of kindness and wisdom has remained with me to this day.

“Major General Yoav Mordechai is a source of pride not only for his alma mater, but for Israel and the Jewish world,” said Boys Town Jerusalem Dean of Students Rabbi Moshe Linchner. “His love of Israel and his love of humanity shine through in all that he does.”
