When a Day Camp is a Lifesaver

A necessity, not a luxury

Without missing a beat, nearly 100 Boys Town Jerusalem 7th and 8th graders marked the first day of summer vacation by making a beeline back to campus for a one-month Day Camp. On Day Two of the camp, Principal Rabbi Yehudah Rosencrantz received a frantic phone call from a mother.

“The court has ordered us evicted from our apartment for not paying the rent,” she sobbed. “The police are outside. We’ll soon be in the street. At least I know my son David will be spending his days at the BTJ Camp, thank goodness… But, please, Rabbi, can I send David’s younger brother Ilan to camp too? You’ll be saving two lives instead of just one!”

“Although the summer camp is a massive expense to Boys Town Jerusalem, we offer it to our students at a highly subsidized cost, or even free when necessary,”

Thus an exception was made to accept 10-year-old Ilan, who became the youngest (and the luckiest) camper at this year’s BTJ Summer Day Camp. Like their fellow campers, many of whom also face very difficult issues at home, David and Ilan\'s days were filled with great adventures. From sports to hikes to amusement parks to swimming to bowling and carting, the BTJ campers were constantly on the go. Special events took place on campus as well, complete with “experiential learning” sessions for electronics and math fun and more. Most important, two nutritious freshly-cooked meals were served to the hungry campers each day.

”For some, camp is a luxury, but for boys like these it is a necessity, a priceless gift,”

“Although the summer camp is a massive expense to Boys Town Jerusalem, we offer it to our students at a highly subsidized cost, or even free when necessary,” noted BTJ Dean Rabbi Moshe Linchner. “Most families just cannot afford the luxury of sending their sons to any day camp. Without the BTJ Camp, these students would have no alternative but to hang around the house – or the street – for the entire summer.”

Rabbi Linchner praised the growing number of private donors in Israel and across the globe who have contributed camp scholarships. ”For some, camp is a luxury, but for boys like these it is a necessity, a priceless gift,” the Rabbi said.
