Newest BTJ grad Uriel Carmi: “For every person in my life who told me I’d never succeed, there were five people at Boys Town who said ‘Yes, you can!’”

Uriel Carmi, 18, never imagined he’d find himself on the speaker’s podium at his high school graduation. For much of his life, he never dreamed he would graduate at all. Yet today, as the popular student representative of the Boys Town Jerusalem Class of 2017 and a prizewinner for excellence in Computer Studies, Uriel delivered a graduation speech with a powerful message of hope.

“I arrived at Boys Town Jerusalem as a ninth grader who had been in - and then out - of every educational framework possible,” he declared. “But I soon began to understand that this school was different. At Boys Town Jerusalem, the minute a student expresses his willingness to learn, there’s no limit to what the teachers will give him and no limit to how much he can learn.”

“For every person in my life who told me I’d never succeed, there were five people at Boys Town Jerusalem who said ‘Yes, you can!’”

BTJ Junior High Principal Rabbi Yehudah Rosencrantz recalls the day Uriel arrived at the school. “This boy was a terror who broke everything in sight. He desperately lacked confidence, and academically he was far behind his classmates. But we believed in Uriel and gave all we could. Soon, before our eyes, we watched this student change, grow and excel. He’s now a candidate for joining a cyber defense unit in the IDF. Uriel is bound to make invaluable contributions to Israel and the Jewish People.”

“But I soon began to understand that this school was different. At Boys Town Jerusalem, the minute a student expresses his willingness to learn, there’s no limit to what the teachers will give him and no limit to how much he can learn.”

Rabbi Elimelech Yaakov, who opened his heart and his home to Uriel, lauds the young man’s iron will in overcoming a difficult family background and in reaching extraordinary heights in his studies. “He’s a talented student, an idealist,” the rabbi said proudly. “Uriel’s success is a medal of honor for Boys Town Jerusalem.”

For his outstanding achievements, Uriel was awarded the “Ruth & Bernard Friedman Award for Excellence in Cisco and Computer Studies” at the graduation ceremony. “For every person in my life who told me I’d never succeed, there were five people at Boys Town Jerusalem who said ‘Yes, you can!’” Uriel proclaimed, as his audience cheered the remarkable young man before them.
