Meet Some BTJ Graduates

Professor Dan Engelhard, MD - Class of ‘76

AlumniAfter graduating BTJ, Englehard served in the IDF medical corps and was decorated for bravery during the Yom Kippur War. Today he is director of the department of pediatrics at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. A specialist in infectious diseases, Englehard is often sent by the Israeli government to treat victims of wars and natural disasters in trouble-spots throughout the world.

 

Major Benny Brinder – Class of ‘91

AlumniBrinder grew up on Moshav Zakaria, an agricultural community near Bet Shemesh established by immigrants from Kurdistan and Iraq. He studied at BTJ for eight years, graduating from the College of Applied Engineering. Today, as commander of the Fighter Jet Engines Division, of one of the largest air force bases in Israel, he is responsible for the engine maintenance of F-15 and F-16 jet fighters and helicopters

 

Chagai Weinberg – Class of ‘87

AlumniAfter graduating from the College of Applied Engineering, Weinberg served as a jet fighter technician in the Israel Air Force. Today, he is a senior engineer and executive representative of the Rafael Israel Armament Development Authority, which develops "smart bombs."

 

 

Menachem Altman – Class of ‘69

AlumniA graduate of the BTJ School of electronics, Altman served in IDF Signal Corps. Today, as a compliance engineer at Gilat Satellite Networks, he is responsible for international quality standards control for product export to 44 nations worldwide

 

 

Lt. Colonel Shlomi Coopersmith – Class of ‘83

AlumniCoopersmith arrived at BTJ at age 14, following the death of his father. The school’s founder, Rabbi Alexander Linchner, z"l, became his personal mentor. Following his graduation from the College of Applied Engineering, he served in the IDF and became an engineer and career officer. Before retiring from the IDF, he was responsible for authorizing all parts purchased from civilian industry, a position requiring international travel.

 

Senior Staff Sergeant Z'fania Sha’ar – Class of ‘82

AlumniThe son of immigrants from Yemen, Sha’ar is a graduate of the College of Applied Engineering. In his career position in the IDF, he is responsible for the acquisition of airplane parts and accessories from private industry.

 

 

Rabbi Yitzhak Steiner– Class of ‘75

AlumniGraduate of BTJ (mechanics) 1975 The son of Holocaust survivors from Czechoslovakia, Rabbi Steiner attended BTJ with his twin brother, Major Baruch Steiner. Both brothers served as career officers in the Israel Air Force. Rabbi Steiner took early retirement from the military and became a high school teacher. His brother recently retired from an air force career spanning more than 30 years that culminated in his commanding the Air Force’s quality control division. He is also a talented cantor.

Lt. Colonel Shimon Gabai – Class of ‘75

AlumniGabai served as a mechanic in the Israel Air Force. Today he is the chief investigator of the Israeli Police Force’s Jerusalem region.

 

 


Dr. Avi Levy – Class of ‘71

AlumniA resident of Neve Dekalim in Gush Katif until its evacuation in the summer of 2005, Levy is the founding director of the Chemdat Hadarom Teachers College for Women in the Negev. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the college has 400 students, offering B.Ed. and religious studies. Levi holds a Ph.D. in the physiology of natural sciences and is an expert on Israeli animal life

 

Shaul Hodefi – Class of ‘81

AlumniA graduate of the College of Applied Engineering who served in a classified electronics unit of the IDF, Hodefi is an expert in advanced satellite surveillance systems. He works as a production supervisor for ELTA Electronic Industries, Ltd., a subsidiary of Israel Aircraft Industries. His brother, Nissim, whi graduated BTJ in 1972, was killed in the line of duty in 1976.

 

Captain N. S. – Class of ‘98

AlumniA native of Rosh Ha’Ayin, from a family of Yemenite origin, S. studied at BTJ for eight years and graduated from the College of Applied Engineering. Serving in the Israel Air Force, S. joined the impressive roster of BTJ graduates who have completed the arduous training to become an IDF pilot.

 


Lieutenant Doron Atik – Class of ‘98

AlumniAtik studied for eight years at BTJ and graduated from the College of Applied Engineering. Today he is a senior air traffic controller at an IAF Base. He is also licensed as a civilian air traffic controller.

 

 

Dr. Moshe Suissa – Class of ‘78

AlumniAfter graduating from the College of Applied Engineering, Suissa served as a medical officer in the Israel Air Force. Following his service, he received medical degrees from Ben Gurion University and the Hebrew University. Working today as a cardiologist at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, Suissa recently spent three years carrying out research at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
